Every Year Dave Fresquez from Monte Vista Organics gives us a few tomato plant to grow on our patio.  This helps us with timing of our fabulous Pizza Margherita and Caprese Salad.

Both of these dishes are made only with Sun-ripened, Soil-grown local Heirloom Tomatoes.  These tomatoes are fully ripe when harvested and we do not refrigerate them to insure their full, rich flavor and sweetness.

Sometimes the first ones are available in the last week of July.  By mid August we can count on a very steady supply that will last right into October if Mother nature plays along.  The cool nights in late September slow down the ripening and availability becomes very slim.   By mid October we have our first frost that robs the glorious fruit of all it’s luscious sweetness, thats the sign to stop and get ready to look for all the “Green Tomato ” recipes.

Last harvest from out Patio cherry tomatoes on Sept 27th 2013. You can see the foliage of the tomato plant in the back ground turning dry and yellow.  They forecast temperatures of 34F at night. I will be able to buy some more from Dave next Tuesday however frost for the next weekend announces  the end of a fabulous Tomato season in Santa Fe.
I look forward with anticipation to next summer

September is a glorious month for fresh produce at the Farmers Market and the Heirloom Tomatoes are the Jewels of the crop

Aug 23rd, finally there is an abundance of the priced Heirloom Tomatoes. They are delicious and worth every day we waited for. Should have them until the first week of October or until the first frost.

Aug 19th, now we’re getting impatient, this has been the latest for tomatoes as far as I can remember. We do get some from the Farmers Market since August 6th but not much.

July 31st and still not ripe. They grow rapidly and have a lot of fruit but not ready yet.

They growing fast, this is July 20th, many flowers and some fruit clusters.
