The Listening Horse Therapeutic Riding

We love horses, in case you didn’t know by now! So that was what first drew us to The Listening Horse. There we met Gus, president and Laurie and Kathy, and we knew we had met people who were truly devoted to a calling. The Listening Horse Therapeutic Riding is a member of the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International (PATH Intl). They offer recreational therapy with horses for people facing the challenges of the following: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Physical Injuries, Traumatic Brain Injuries, Spinal Cord Injury, Visual & Auditory Impairment, Amputation, Cancer Recovery, Autism, Down Syndrome, Emotional & Behavioral Difficulties, At Risk Youth, Substance Abuse Recovery, Grief. As you possibly know, horses are incredibly sensitive – they do hear and see and smell everything. And they are capable of knowing when their human needs support, help, and confidence building. Now I don’t mean every horse is adapted to this job, but the horses chosen for The Listening Horse understand the job they have to do. Phenomenal changes can and do occur in the presence of horses or while riding, especially when approached with intention. It’s beautiful to see.
So on NOV 18, we urge you to eat a lot and eat often at Joe’s because all day long for every dollar you spend, we will donate 20% back to The Listening Horse. It won’t cost you a penny extra, but it will help us raise money for this fine program. You can of course donate more – the Listening Horse volunteers will be here all day. http://www.listeninghorse.org/
Thanksgiving – oh my, can it be here already? As in years past, Joe’s offers the easiest most delicious way for you to enjoy Thanksgiving dinner – for one or up to 50 people. Essentially just heat and serve! Couldn’t be easier. Please ask for the detailed menu and order form. Or get it on the website. Joesdining.com.   The turkey is Heidi’s organic and there are many scrumptious side dishes to choose from. Order the complete dinner or just a few a la carte dishes. And please do not leave it til the last few days as we do always sell out and hate to decline anyone.

And speaking of holidays, Joe’s Red Room accommodates 30-40 people for both sit-down parties and come ‘n go mingling parties. We can do anything from finger foods and beverages to full several course meals. And Roland always offers the best price he possibly can for large groups. Please book early.

We are all witness to a global and unprecedented shake-up. Societal norms in all sectors — government, banking, animal rights, religion, human rights, farming, education, medicine, law, to name a few — are being challenged sometimes at great cost. In my area of interest, it is profoundly gratifying to see the resurfacing and in some cases, initial emegence of, many simple natural healing agents.  Many of these healing agents have been suppressed. Many are both efficacious and inexpensive. Imagine that. Naming just a few – oxygen therapies, UV blood treatment, sodium chlorite (MMS), superfoods, turpentine (yup), Vit D and sunshine, used broadly in the 40’s for tuberculosis.
And then there is hemp.

Hemp has recently been unfettered after decades of suppression and lies, whoops I mean “misinformation”. Now I’m no expert in this field – I spent the 60’s and 70’s as a career driven nerd and missed the whole generational imprint of marijuana, mushrooms and acid rock. So no one is more surprised than me to discover the extensive benefits of hemp. Now the way I understand it – there are 3 main varieties of hemp, each adapted to different uses. The high THC variety is of course valued for getting high, the others have other valuable uses. DiJa know – hemp oil is a terrific cancer therapy? That hemp fiber ropes are preferred on ships because of their superior strength?   That farming hemp is at least 2 x’s as profitable as and far more sustainable than conventional crop farming?   Boring as I am, hallucinogenic properties have little appeal. But healing properties?  sustainable farming? – now you’re talking my language!

The economic and environmental potential is enormous. Cannabis Hemp is capable of producing significant quantities of paper, textiles, building materials, food, medicine, fuel and on and on.   It can grow in most climates throughout the world with low water and fertilizer, no pesticides, no herbicides. Cannabis Hemp (also known as Indian Hemp) has enormous potential to become a major natural resource. From 1776 to 1937, hemp was a major American crop. Yet, most American history books contain no mention of hemp. The War on Drugs has created an atmosphere of silence. Both Washington and Jefferson grew hemp, used products made from hemp, and praised the hemp plant in their writings.

Witness to it’s healing properties – you simply must watch this video about Rick Simpson, a Canadian man’s journey to bring hemp oil to his community and the wonderful healings it effected in ailing friends and neighbors. http://phoenixtears.ca/
Now clearly, I still don’t know enough about this wonderful plant – so believe me I will be at the upcoming Carbon Economy Series event to learn more. Save this date Fri Nov 21, and attend Doug Fine’s evening talk and/or Saturday’s full workshop on Hemp at the SFCC. This expert will share his wealth of knowledge about the growing, the uses and the politics of hemp. The more you know about it the more you’ll see the potential here for a sustainable and profitable economic opportunity. Reserve 505-819-3828.

I’m the first to say that at times and under certain circumstances pharmaceuticals are necessary and appropriate. But it is becoming apparent that there is rampant over-use of prescription pads chosen over the practice of real compassionate and connected medicine. The latter takes time and it takes getting to know your patient. Our system now does not allow that. So it behooves us to research research research when we are given a Rx.   Here are just some prescription drugs to question:

Antacids like Nexium and Prevacid.  Statins like Lipitor, Crestor.   Antibiotics: the leading cause of antibiotic-resistant “superbugs.”   Antipsychotics – Seroquel, Abilify, Risperdal, Zyprexa.   Opioid pain relievers are the leading cause of prescription drug deaths in America, likeVicodin, OxyContin, Percocet.  Antidepressants like Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil & Lexapro. Joe’s recently changed to raw cane sugar for all our baking and cooking. Pure raw cane sugar is not GMO.
Also the salt on your table is now sea salt.

Why do we keep hammering on this “buy local” theme? There are many factors that are out of our hands when it comes to our food supply. Most of what ends up on the American dinner table derives from a shockingly few giant agribusinesses. Their influence reaches from designing the (GMO) seeds to planting, harvesting, processing and shipping. We as consumers cannot with confidence hand over the entire stewardship of our food to these few multinationals. Our passion here at Joe’s is for a local sustainable food supply – food produced by growers who are accountable for what they grow. KYG – Know Your Grower. We are able to look our local farmer in the eye and ask him about his growing practices or even visit his operation. This gives us the confidence that we are eating food that is healthy, wholesome, non-genetically engineered, often better than organic, humanely treated and minimally processed. It is grown with a smaller energy-use footprint and transported short distances. We cannot divorce human health, the economy, ecology, personal (perhaps spiritual) satisfaction or honorable work from food. Food is fundamental. What we eat, where it comes from, the stewardship of food animals, the nurturing and building of soils – all these factors affect us at a cellular and visceral level … whether we slow down enough to be aware of it or not. We so are fortunate in Santa Fe to have one of the very best Farmers Markets in the nation.

Here at Joe’s we do our best to offer this bounty to you, keeping dollars in the community. In the interest of transparency, in 2008 Joe’s spent $30,000 on local foods. In 2009 that increased to $60,000. And since 2012 we have far exceeded $100,000 per annum. During the growing season as much as 95% of our produce is locally sourced.
Land, economy, health – inseparable.
*Here are some of the farmers/ranchers we have developed long-standing partnerships with – Monte Vista Organics (Dave and Loretta), Camino de Paz Farm & School (Greg & Patty), Shepherd’s Lamb (Antonio and Molly), La Mont’s Buffalo (Monte and Lana), Green Tractor Farms (Tom and Mary), Synergia Ranch (Mark), La Montanita Co-Op, Sweetgrass Co-Op, Matt Romero Farms.

Tired of still paying for BB’s (big banks) bailouts? Tired of lining the pockets of the uber-rich Wall Street bankers? And still no convictions? DiJa know… in 2011 a congressional audit o f the Federal Reserve found that the Fed gave 16 trillion dollars from American taxpayers to bail out the “too big to fail” banks with a hefty portion of it going to CEO’s obscene bonuses. Can you imagine — had this staggering figure been re-directed to the people of the US, how different the picture could have looked today? Manufacturing starts, job creation, skills training, roads and bridges repair, national parks, education, etc. Every time we use a credit card, part of that 3%-5% fee contributes to the BB’s. Now let’s be real – in today’s world you cannot function without a credit card, but there are still (legal) alternatives that can save money and reduce our dependency on and subsidies to the BB’s. We have a couple of suggestions: (1.) Are you on Joe’s Check List? If you are a “regular” and wish to pay by check, please ask your waiter to get you on the list. (2.) Joe’s own credit card/gift card – purchase a $100 gift card with cash or check or silver coin or gold coin, get a $10 free bonus!
